High School

Waterford Kamhlaba United World College, Mbabane, Swaziland

Major

Undecided, but Theatre as a possible minor

Why did you choose Barnard?

There were so many ways in which I was already involved in the types of discourse on campus. Visiting the campus highlighted those for me, so Barnard was an instinctive choice.

Favorite things in Morningside Heights

The quiet and calm, in relation to other parts of the city

Favorite things in New York City

How vibrant the city is and the chance I have to explore all my passions without wandering too far; jazz; poetry; food; theatre; art and culture.

Favorite class

Philosophy and Feminism , taught by Professor Christia Mercer. I never leave that class uninspired, a new fact about my status as a woman is revealed to me each session. Also I have a deep passion for women's issues and philosophy as a whole.

Favorite professor

Christia Mercer is very insightful and is not afraid to be very frank with her students even if that requires sometimes being slightly unorthodox. I think her students appreciate her more for that.

Why did you choose Barnard?

I always wanted to go to a liberal arts school. When I was in the middle of my college search I came across Barnard College and immediately liked its setting. I thought, I will be in one of the most dynamic cities in the world but at the same time in a small community -- and that is exactly what I got. At Barnard I have the benefit of being in a small liberal arts school but I also I have open access to the wonderful resources at Columbia University. I truly get the best of both worlds. For me, it is the perfect setting.

Favorite things in Morningside Heights

Apart from the Columbia University campus, I would say the Hungarian Pastry Shop is up at the top of my list as well as all the other restaurants we have that serve food from so many different places in the world.

Favorite things in New York City

Being in NYC you can really do anything that you want. You can truly be yourself and no one will mind. Personally, I love going to see Broadway shows, exploring around different cafes but mostly just getting on a subway with a bunch of friends and doing things spontaneously.  I am in New York City; that is what it is about!

Favorite class

Until now my favourite class is probably Psychology. It is something that I am truly interested in.  The topics that we cover make me want to learn more.

Most interesting person you've met at Barnard

Doris Miller in the College Activities Office. She always greets me so warmly and she has fascinating stories to tell. I love going there and just saying 'hi,' because I always walk out so much more cheerful and happy.

Why did you choose Barnard?

I chose Barnard because it allows me to experience the best of both worlds. I get to be a part of the exclusive Barnard family where I have met the most amazing, multi-talented women from all backgrounds. At the same time have access to the faculty, courses and facilities at Columbia University. The best part however is that I am studying and living in the Big Apple, which is a cosmopolitan hub of the world!

Favorite things in Morningside Heights

Casbah Rouge, Riverside Park, Amir's Falafel, street fairs

Favorite things in New York City

Shopping in Soho, and on 39th Street, Central Park, Korean and Thai Food, Avalon and Club Deep!

Why did you choose Barnard?

Very simple. We get the best of both worlds -- a small, close-knit community in the middle of a vibrant city like New York, affiliated with the wondrous Columbia University. As a women's liberal arts college, we are cared for and at the same time given the opportunity to stand on our own feet.

Favorite things in Morningside Heights

My favorite thing about our neighborhood is the caring feeling, because everything in the area-from clothing stores to grocery stores -- is there for Barnard and Columbia students.

Favorite things in New York City

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Times Square, the beautiful and peaceful parks, the cruise around the Statue of Liberty, Comedy clubs. Also, the fast-paced atmosphere. I have yet to see someone walking slowly and casually down the street!

Major

Art History; Middle East History

Why did you choose Barnard?

The intimate atmosphere and emphasis on writing, in conjunction with the vast possibilities and famous professors across the street. And, of course, because of the city.

Favorite things in Morningside Heights

The farmers' market; Samad's Deli; Riverside Park; my roof.

Favorite things in New York City

All the free outdoor events during the summer (movies and concerts by the river, Shakespeare plays and operas in the park); interacting with people on a regular basis with whom I share no common language, the work/internship opportunities, Brooklyn's Park Slope neighborhood.

Favorite class

Of course I love all the classes that have to do with my majors, but one of the best classes I have taken so far was 20th Century Urbanization from a Comparative Perspective. If you want to understand the US better than most Americans do and learn more about cities around the world, this is the class. (A point not to be underestimated is that most of the homework involves playing SimCity.)

Most interesting person you've met at Barnard

In the beginning I had a lot of friends who were also international students. I learned a lot from them and I'm still very close with them, but now I have learned that the people with the most mono-lingual and mono-cultural, apparently conventional or boring biographies are often most interesting people you'll meet. Believe it or not, some of the people that fascinate me most here are from the  Midwest.

Favorite professor

Professor Zainab Bahrani. She is the coolest, most cosmopolitan feminist art historian you'll ever meet. When the war in Iraq had just started and the National Museum was looted, she went back to her home country (she was born in Baghdad) and saved some of the most precious pieces of early human civilization. I only listened to her lecture a few times in my Intro to Art History class, but her research and ideas (and adventurous UN missions!) have really shaped me academically.

I am originally from the United States, but grew up in London, England and Paris, France.

High School

International School of Paris, Paris, France

Major

English with a concentration in Film; minor in Psychology

Why did you choose Barnard?

I chose Barnard because I was looking for a small liberal arts college in New York City.  Barnard appealed to me because of its ability to provide an intimate classroom experience with the resources of a larger university.  I was also intrigued by Barnard's renowned professors and its strength in the academic fields I was specifically interested in pursuing.  Also, I've spent most of my life in large cities and knew I wanted to be in New York, so Barnard was an ideal fit for me!

Favorite things in Morningside Heights

I love the farmers' market and being close to the park in the fall.  I'm also a fan of the food at Nussbaum and Wu, a local deli/bakery.

Favorite things in New York City

I love all that the city has to offer from its exotic restaurants to hundreds of museums. One of my favorite things about the city is being able walk everywhere and explore the city at random.  I am also very fond of the various film festivals, such as the Tribeca Film Festival, that take place throughout the year.

Jazz clubs;  museums (Neue Gallerie especially); Central Park; shopping in Soho and on Madison Avenue; restaurants and hotel bars.

Favorite class

The Modern Novel, because I got to study my favourite historical period through literature.

Most interesting person you've met at Barnard

My friend Linnea, because I can see how her life experiences have shaped her for the better. Also, I trust and enjoy hearing her views and ideas because they are well thought out, but never closed to being challenged. She is extremely open-minded and never assumes anything.

Favorite professor

Lisa Tiersten, because she is smart, well travelled, open to discussion, funny, and sees the absurd in things.

Why did you choose Barnard?

Because it is a small college within a big research university - it protects me as a woman and individual in the big chaos, while I still have access to all resources of a big university. And of course, because it is in New York City which offers an amazing social as well as professional life with all its beauties, happenings, and internships.

Favorite things in Morningside Heights

The strawberry cheesecake at Nussbaum and Wu (a local deli/bakery), a walk in the Morningside Park or classy Arabic music at the hookah bar, Casbah Rouge..

Favorite things in New York City

Should I go with its Fall Fashion Show in  Bryant Park, the exhibitions in the MOMA or the MET, or rather with the beauties of Central Park and the craziness of Times Square?

Favorite class

Although I took Astronomy only to fulfill my science requirement, it became my favorite class ever taken. How amazing is it to go up to the roof and look through a giant telescope at stars or go to Central Park and analyze rocks for your homework?

Most interesting person you've met at Barnard

Hard to name one--all of the students, professors and staff are amazing people with amazing backgrounds and big hearts. Only to mention a few: Dean for International Students Christina Kuan Tsu, Director of Financial Aid Alison Rabil, Dean Taylor, Dean Abdoo, Professor Taylor Carmen of the Philosophy Department, and many others.

Favorite professor

Of course, my Astronomy class professor -- Mr. David Helfand -- because he is funny, too smart, but always there to help and makes the astronomy class be more than just boring facts.

I chose Barnard because I liked that it is a demanding academic institution with the benefits of a small liberal arts college, and offers extensive resources of a larger University at hand. I wanted a personalized college campus experience, and rather than being isolated I wanted to be thrown into the bustling metropolis of New York, the city that delights in novelty and is ripe with opportunities.

Favorite things in Morningside Heights

Max Soha café, Kim's music and video store, The Hungarian Pastry Shop, Avery Library (Columbia University's Art and Architecture Library)

Why did you choose Barnard?

Because I wanted to do a double major, and still be in control of my classes, while still being in New York City.  Other schools were too rigid to accommodate that, or lacked a campus and a community.

Favorite things in Morningside Heights

Nussbaum and Wu (a local deli/bakery); Riverside Park; the Columbia steps; Library Bridge; Avery Library (Columbia University's Art and Architecture Library); eating midnight breakfast at Tom's (our local diner); Labyrinth Books; Cathedral St. John the Divine; Koronet's Pizza.

Favorite things in New York City

The Met; MOMA; theater; Central Park; the pace of the city; walking in Riverside Park; the opportunities for internships, jobs, events; poetry readings; big book stores.  I could go on for a long time with this list.

Favorite things in New York City

I love walking up Madison Avenue, shopping and then catching my breath at The Met. It feels amazing to take the cross-town bus through Central Park and to know that no accent sounds strange in New York City.

Bike rides in Central Park and on the Hudson River; the cafe on the 2nd floor in the MOMA; Takashimaya; the Chelsea galleries; shop window displays in Bergdorf's, Barneys; Economy Candy on Rivington Street; Red Hook neighborhood in Brooklyn.

Why did you choose Barnard?

For the combination of the exciting large city yet a small college community bent on acceptance and allowing one to feel less anonymous; and of course the amazing resources available to me.

Favorite things in Morningside Heights

Riverside Park -- it's beautiful -- and the variety of restaurants.

Favorite things in New York City

There is always something going on, something to suit all interests no matter what they are.  The other day I found a skate-dancing club in Central Park. You are never bored here and you are always learning new things.  Also the city provides everything you might need.

Favorite class

That's a tough one.  I have two favorite classes.  One of them is my English class -- History of the Americas: Reinventing Literary History -- which is surprising for me because I am usually more of a science person than a literature-and-the-arts person but the class is just so interesting and relevant to a lot of my personal philosophies that I can't help being excited in the discussions.  The second class I really enjoy is my Vocal Repertoire class; it's like nothing I've ever done before.

Most interesting person you've met at Barnard

I've met so many interesting people I can't isolate just one.  I have met people who have traveled the world -- opera singers, film-makers, people who can make baboon noises accurate to every grunt, activists, salsa-dancing comediennes -- and the list goes on.  With a variety like that I don't think I can pinpoint one as more interesting than the other.

Favorite professor

I think it's too early to say but my Literature teacher, Karen Weiser, always puts in a lot of effort to make the lesson as interesting as possible.
