Barnard College Archives
Reproductions of Archival Materials
|
Digital reproductions or photocopies of archival material may be obtained through the Archives, as long as the material is strong enough to withstand the scanning or photocopying process. Our first and foremost concern is the preservation of archival material. We reserve the right not to accept any order that may cause damage to an item. The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction (e.g. digital scan). One of these specified conditions is that the reproduction not be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a patron uses a reproduction in excess of “fair use” as stated by Title 17, without first obtaining written permission from the Barnard College Archives, that patron may be libel for copyright infringement. Requests for commercial endeavors will be assessed on a case by case basis. This institution reserves the right not to accept any copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law. As the physical rights holder of this material, the Barnard College Archives charges a usage fee if images are to be used in any nonprofit or commercial publication, broadcast, website, exhibition, etc. The usage fee is not a copyright fee. Usage fees helps to cover a small portion of the expenses required to maintain and preserve archival material.
Schedule of Fees: Photocopies: 20 cents per exposure + $10 for orders of more than twenty pages.
Scans for archival photographs are $5 each.
High and/or low resolution Tiff, JPG or PDF formats are available.
Scans are free to members of the Barnard Community (including Columbia University). Scans may be emailed to the patron or burned to a CD provided by the patron. CDs may also be purchased from the Archives for $3. Shipping and handling are an additional $5. Turnaround time for all photo orders is two weeks. Rush orders may be accommodated for an additional fee on a case by case basis. Photographic archival print reproductions may also be ordered through the Archives using an outside vendor. The patron is responsible for making payment directly to the outside vendor. There is an additional handling fee of $20 for this service. Moving images: $10 per second for non-profit use; $20 per second for commercial use
One-Time Reproduction Rights: Fees may be negotiated according to project. Non-profit organizations must supply letter or form certifying tax-exempt status.
