Barnard College, Columbia University is seeking a Technical Specialist to join its Academic Technologies department. Reporting to the Associate Director for Technical Support Services, the Technical Specialist provides technical hardware and software support for servers, labs and computers maintained by the College’s Academic Technologies department. Typical duties include:
Test, install, and configure new computers for faculty, staff and labs. Customize for individual computing environments.
Train Barnard community members on efficient use of computers, software applications, email and storage devices.
Produce PC/Macintosh ghosts with documentation for student labs, special labs, library public workstations; evaluate cloning and software security options for PC and Macintosh lab computers.
Additionally, the Technical Specialist works to identify and resolve outstanding or developing technical needs on campus related to academic computing and researches, evaluates and reports on emerging trends in technology applications relevant to higher education.
Bachelor’s degree, and a minimum of two years experience in computer operations and user support.
MCSE or Novell certification, or substantial progress toward its completion, preferred.
Macintosh experience, including basic troubleshooting, highly desirable.
Experience in LAN, TCP/IP network operation and desktop software support; knowledge of UNIX, Windows XP/Vista, and TCP/IP based networking; experience in creating and deploying ghosts
Ability to work independently and interact positively with a wide range of users.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Higher education experience preferred.

Web Development Assistant - Barnard student position, part time
Barnard's Academic Technologies Department is looking for Barnard students to work as Web Development Assistants and to assist on diverse projects related to educational technology (CourseWorks, Sakai, wikis, etc.) A basic understanding of computers, HTML, and good communications skills needed. Photoshop a plus. Will train on specifics. Pay scale commensurate with experience.
