Grants for Students

The Department of Biological Sciences will award small grants to students who need some financial help to take summer courses at biological labs or field stations or to undertake field or laboratory research.

How to Apply

If you would like to be considered for a grant and you have secured a summer position, please bring a brief letter of application to the Biology Office (1203 Altschul) on or before April 15 . This letter should include:

1. A brief description of your plans and their importance to your studies.
2. A detailed budget which indicates the minimum grant that will enable you to undertake the work you plan.

Students who receive grants will report on the nature of their work at a meeting of the Biology Department next year.

Small grants are available from the following sources:
DONALD AND NANCY RITCHIE FUND
EDNA HENRY BENNET FUND
HERBERT MAULE RICHARDS FUND

Maura Shannon Barrett Internship

The Department of Biological Sciences also administers an internship for Barnard students interested in medically related research over the summer.  This internship can be awarded in two ways:

1) An internship may be arranged at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.  Contact Maria Mininoin the Biology Office (Room 1203 Altschul) for more information.

2) Students with pre-arranged, non-funded internships in a biomedical research lab may apply for partial stipends through this internship fund.  Application should be made following the instructions described above for the grants.
