Mini-courses are non-credit classes you can take for fun.
Registration for Spring 2008 Mini-courses will take place
January 28, 29, 30, 2008 from 11:00am-2:00pm.
Location: Barnard Lobby.
Classes will be held weekly from February 11-March 28, 2008. No classes the week of March 17, 2008 (Spring Break).
Please note that Monday, January 28th that registration is open to Barnard students only.

Guitar Lessons

Learn the basics of guitar technique and theory in a fun and supportive environment. Learn various picking and strumming patterns, chord progressions, and popular folk and rock songs.

Explore the elegant and passionate art of the Argentine Tango. This social dance was born on the docks of Buenos Aires little more than a century ago and is now popular all over the world. See for yourself how the Argentines developed expressions of emotion, sensuality, and energy through movement. Learn to listen with your body, communicate with a partner, dance to music, and play with rhythm and melody. The course will cover basic walking steps, beginning patterns, balance and musicality. Professional tango musicians will make guest appearances. Prior experience is not required.

Wine Appreciation

Students over 21, faculty, and staff are invited to learn about the exciting world of wine. In six sessions,
you learn to decipher a wine label, navigate great grape-growing regions of the world, pair wine and food,
and a whole lot more. Tasting several examples of still and sparkling wines at each session helps to
unravel the complexities of red, white and rosé.
Note: ID’s will be checked at registration. Bring a notebook and be sure to eat before each session.
CU Raas

The Columbia University Raas Team is a dance competition team that seeks to promote the awareness
of a particular type of Indian folk dance called garba-raas that is indigenous to the state of Gujarat in
western India among members of the Columbia University and Barnard College community. It is a form of
stick dancing that is done at many Indian weddings and religious festivals. CU Raas competes in
several national competitions a year.

Learn basic beading and create lovely necklaces, bracelets, and earrings to wear or give as gifts.
You’ll acquire an elementary knowledge of semi-precious beads and their cosmic properties.
If time permits, we will discuss the uses of beads throughout history.
The last class will be a bead shopping excursion to the city’s wholesale jewelry district.

Beginning Knitting

Learn basic knitting skills and complete a cozy project by winter! Students will master the basic
knitting techniques of casting on, knitting and purling, casting off and finishing (sewing pieces together)
and measuring gauge as they create either a poncho/hat set or a scarf/hat set. This class will also address
all your knitting curiosities such as where to buy supplies, what basic knitting tools are all about,
and other handy knitting resource information. Materials are not included. |
