Do you have a permanent disability that affects one or more of your daily life activities? Disabilities may include hearing, mobility or visual impairments, as well as invisible disabilities such as chronic medical conditions (arthritis, cancer, diabetes, kidney disorder, lupus, seizure disorder, TBI, etc.), learning disabilities/ADD, psychiatric disabilities and substance abuse/recovery.
The Office of Disability Services (ODS) also works with students with temporary disabilities (illness, injury or hospitalization of more than two weeks duration) where academic accommodation or assistance may be needed. Please note that after matriculation, the Barnard Primary Care Health Service in Lower Level Brooks (212/854-2091) should be notified of your temporary disability prior to contacting ODS. What can we do?
- Provide administrative/academic advocacy and counseling
- Help find volunteer/paid readers, notetakers, tutors and other accommodative aides
- Assist in obtaining specialized aids and equipment, tape recorders, wheelchairs, assistive technology, etc.
- Arrange informal meetings with other Barnard students and alumnae with similar disabilities via our E-mentors Program and BAID Network (Barnard Alumnae Involved with Disabilities)
- Inform you of specialized funding sources, including: ODS, Barnard, VESID (Vocational Education Services for Individuals with Disabilities), CBVH (Commission for the Blind and Visually Handicapped) and other public/private resources
- Share our extensive resource collection of periodicals, books, articles and videos/DVDson disability-related topics
- Establish a telephone hook-up if you are restricted to home or hospital on an extended basis

Our aim is to provide support services to students, faculty and staff which encourage Barnard students with disabilities to become self-sufficient in managing their own accommodations.
