THE CHOIR OF EXETER COLLEGE, OXFORD
A PROGRAM OF TRADITIONAL ENGLISH ANTHEMS

The Choir of Exeter College, Oxford sings a program of Traditional English Anthems

Friday, 09/11 7 PM
Union Theological Seminary
120th Street and Broadway

Exeter College Chapel Choir, one of the finest mixed-voice choirs in the University of Oxford will present a programme of sacred choral music, much of it from England. This rich Anglican tradition, founded particularly around the office of Evensong, has been in existence for over 500 years and is still as vibrant as ever. The choir are as at home in the sublime music of Byrd,Tallis and their contemporaries as they are in the equally living twentieth century tradition, whose exponents include Elgar, Howells and Parry, who was educated at Eton College, and also Exeter College, Oxford. His pioneering spirit lives on in the choir today, and the choir continues to go from strength to strength. Contemporary music is also featured in the choir's repertoire, and they have worked with several living composers, and are currently awaiting a new commission from major English composer Jonathan Dove. Another alumnus, Alec Wyton, will be familiar to New Yorkers for his many years as Organist of St. John the Divine where he was a key part of the musical life of the city, working with many prominent musicians including Leopold Stokowski.

NEW FEMINIST ACTIVISM
A PANEL DISCUSSION WITH MIA HERNDON, DEBRA COLE AND RINKU SEN

New Feminist Activism

Wednesday, 9/16 6:30 PM
James Room
4th Floor Barnard Hall

Feminism today is all about intersections. Where, for example, do reproductive issues meet with workplace rights? What are the links between sexual and economic justice? Join progressive activist organizers as they explore how young feminists are fighting the good fight for educational reform, the environment, and racial and class equality. By taking advantage of the newest forms of media, through social networking and building bold, even unexpected, alliances, these activists are creating a brand of activism that looks markedly different from the feminism of yesterday but remains vitally, fundamentally concerned with social justice and social change. Mia Herndon is Executive Director of the Third Wave Foundation; Debra Cole is a member of Domestic Workers United; and Rinku Sen is President and Executive Director of the Applied Research Center.

NORA
A FILM SCREENING AND DISCUSSION WITH NORA CHIPAUMIRE, ALLA KOVGAN, AND DIERDRE TOWERS

Nora

Monday, 09/21 7 PM
Julius S. Held Auditorium
304 Barnard Hall

Part biopic, part fable, part dramatic cinema, part dance film, Nora delves into the life and art of Zimbabwe-born choreographer Nora Chipaumire, a self-exiled artist now based in New York. Chipaumire’s work is fiercely transnational, unafraid and eager to cross cultural, creative, and geographic boundaries. She creates provocative and politically relevant multimedia dance work, illuminating the struggles of what it means to be human in an increasingly borderless world. Inspired by art from her native country such as Shona sculpture and chimurenga music—art that results from the often-violent convergence of rural, urban, African, non-African, cultural, economic, colonial, and technological ideas—Chipaumire speaks to the human condition with power, authority, and urgency.
