Advancing Excellence: Professorships and Faculty Support Funds
Committed teacher/scholars are core to Barnard's educational mission. In their direct, close interactions with students, Barnard faculty members embody the ideal of the caring, passionate teacher combined with the world-class scholar, communicating their own intellectual enthusiasm and rigorous scholarship. But Barnard professors must do more with less. The dedicated Barnard faculty, which comprises fewer tenured professors than the faculty of peer colleges, must teach more courses and rival their peers in the quality of their scholarship and pedagogy. Barnard's dynamic professors deserve more funding at every stage of their development, from junior to senior faculty ranks.

Leadership donors can make a significant impact on the continued success of Barnard professors by establishing a faculty support fund, which helps underwrite research leaves, fund start-up costs associated with new faculty appointments, and offset the research and travel costs of professors' ongoing scholarship. Endowed, named professorships—or chairs—are an exceptional way to recognize outstanding teacher/scholars who are institutional leaders, and to reaffirm the excellence and ideals of the Barnard faculty as a whole. They reward the individual achievement of a gifted faculty member and help the College to recruit a new generation of faculty inspired to attain similar status. They also attract internationally recognized, tenured teacher/scholar "stars" to the faculty ranks. Click here for more information about establishing a professorship at Barnard.

These are just a few of the key areas in which leadership donors can make a difference in the educational process at Barnard. For more information about making a leadership gift, please contact the Office of Major Gifts by calling 212-854-2001, or email development@barnard.edu.
