Barnard offers bright young women a unique educational experience, and one that it is expensive to produce. The rigorous exploration of ideas through engaged discussion and debate requires small class sizes and a low teacher/student ratio. Hands-on learning opportunities in the lab and in the field depend upon adequate resources and up-to-date facilities.

Because Barnard keeps tuition increases to a minimum, every student—even those whose families are able to pay full tuition—receives the equivalent of a 30-percent subsidy on her education, when all costs are considered. Barnard Fund contributors help bridge this gap through their annual gifts. In 2005-06, more than 10,000 alumnae, parents, and friends made a $5.3-million investment in Barnard women by contributing to The Barnard Fund. Following are some of the students, faculty, and resources that benefited from this support.
