Barnard's fourth annual global symposium, Women Changing India, took place on Friday, March 16 in Mumbai, attracting media interest from news organizations worldwide. See below for a sampling of coverage highlights.
In the weeks leading up to "Women Changing India," event listings appeared in print editions of Forbes India, The Asian Age, and DNA (Daily News Analysis). The day before the symposium, The Hindustan Times ran an article about the global symposia series and Barnard, pictured below.
Following the symposium, The New York Times' "India Ink" blog featured an interview with President Debora Spar. "Just by definition, the president of the student body is female. The leaders of all of the clubs are female. The young women really get an opportunity to be in a female environment and to develop intellectually, personally and academically, without always being conscious of being the woman in the room," President Spar said, in response to a question about the Barnard student experience.
Rediff.com featured video interviews with panelist Kiran Bedi, India's first and highest ranking police officer, and Chhavi Rajawat, sarpanch of the village Soda. Watch these interviews below.
An article by the Press Trust of India also highlighted Bedi, who talked about her career choices during the event. The story was picked up widely, appearing in The Times of the India, The Hindustan Times, The Indian Express, The Asian Age, Deccan Chronicle, The Economic Times, NDTV, IBN Live, India Today, Daily Bhaskar, India TV and others.
The entertainment section of The Hindustan Times ran an article about another panelist, film director and choreographer Farah Khan. "By the end of the session, we had half-a-dozen converts who’d learnt that men needed to change their mindsets," she said, noting the value of the symposium for a small group of male high school students in the audience. Bollywood Hungama also ran an article about Khan's participation in the symposium.
