WE WILL BEGIN ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR BARNARD BOUND ON FRIDAY, MAY 1st, 2015
Application Deadline (including all supporting materials): Friday, June 12th, 2015
Saturday, October 10 - Sunday, October 11, 2015 (BARNARD BOUND – for students admitted to the Barnard Bound program)
Monday, October 12, 2015 (OPEN HOUSE – All Barnard Bound participants will be automatically registered to attend our Open House.) If your student is not selected to attend Barnard Bound, she may register for the Open House only on our Open House RSVP page, available at the end of August.
What is Barnard Bound?
Barnard Bound provides a taste of both Barnard College and New York City for promising young women who are high school seniors and self-identity as students of color (which we define as individuals from Black/African-American, Hispanic/Latina, American Indian/Alaskan Native, Asian, bi- and multi-racial backgrounds), especially those students who couldn’t otherwise afford to visit.
Participants spend the first two days touring parts of Manhattan and experiencing its rich diversity of culture, neighborhoods, and of course, food, returning to campus to get a feel for student life and discovering more about Barnard on Monday during Open House. The program also introduces students to important details about our admissions and financial aid processes. It’s our goal to help your students learn as much as they can about our unique and vibrant community.
We hope that your students will also see that Barnard is both affordable and attainable.
How do students apply to Barnard Bound?
The application and the adviser recommendation form will be available starting Friday, May 1st.
Students must complete the online Barnard Bound Student Application. Please note that students will be unable to save and return to this application before submission, so they should be prepared to complete and submit their application in one sitting.
Note: Students will be asked to reply to the following two short answer questions within the application. Please encourage your advisees to write their responses in a word document and paste them into the application when ready to complete and submit:
1) In a well-developed paragraph, explain why you are considering Barnard College. (Limit your response to 200 words or less.)
2) Write a response to ONE of the following questions: 1) Describe a circumstance or situation that challenged you and how you resolved that situation OR 2) Who is one of your role models and why? (Limit your response to 500 words or less.)
In addition to the application, the student's guidance counselor or mentor at a college access organization must submit the Barnard Bound Adviser Recommendation. We hope you can help us find intellectually curious students who would be wonderful fits for our community and would benefit from the mentorship and support that Barnard provides.
Finally, a transcript must be sent with the nomination form (this may be an unofficial transcript). Transcripts and forms may be scanned and emailed or faxed. Please do not send forms or transcripts via postal mail.
The deadline for the student application and all supporting materials is Friday, June 12th, 2015. Applications should be submitted online and transcripts and supporting documents should be sent by e-mail (preferred) or by fax (to 212-854-6220).
Are travel grants available?
Program participation is limited as is our ability to admit every student who applies, but travel grants are made available for students outside of the New York City metro area who demonstrate significant financial need and meet Barnard Bound admission criteria (this includes the potential to succeed at Barnard). Advisers and students will be asked for basic financial information at the time of application to determine qualifications. Travel grant recipients will be notified at the time of program admission.
Expenses for program-related events, subway passes, and meals will be covered by Barnard College for all attendees.
