October 16-17, 2009
Morgan Marmaro '13 and her dad, Marc.
Nearly 300 families visited the Barnard campus for Family Weekend 2009, on October 16th and 17th, experiencing a taste of Barnard's academic, residential and cultural life while gaining insights into career development opportunities and life after Barnard. President Debora Spar's remarks included descriptions of the newly launched Athena Center for Leadership and the October 15th "Just Hair?" panel discussion which untangled the meanings of hair and beauty. The program featured Barnard alumnae Atoosa Rubenstein '93, former editor-in-chief of Seventeen and founding editor of CosmoGIRL! and Ayana Byrd '95, author of Hair Story: Untangling the Roots of Black Hair in America. The Deans and many faculty members participated in receptions, panel discussions, and open houses. Residential Life sponsored its 2nd Annual Fall Fest, a community event for both siblings and parents which included a canned good collection for a local soup kitchen. Families attending Fall Fest were able to enjoy and mingle in the newly renovated Jan R. and Marley Blue Lewis '05 Parlor in Brooks Hall. Nearly all the families attended the luncheon, "Barnard for Life, Life After Barnard," hosted by Dean Dorothy Denburg and featuring three alumnae, with entertainment provided by Bacchantae, Barnard's a cappella group.
