INAUGURAL REMARKS

Investiture
Helene Kaplan ’53, Trustee Emerita and Chair Emerita Jolyne Caruso-Fitzgerald ’81, Trustee

Now the time has come to present to Debora L. Spar the symbol of the Barnard Presidency and to charge her with the responsibilities of her position.

The insignia of office of the President of Barnard College is a medal fashioned of gold, bronze, and silver. It hangs from a chain set with pearls and lapis lazuli beads – lapis lazuli selected because the blue is Barnard’s color.

On the face of the medal is Athena, Goddess of Wisdom, with her owl. Inscribed next to her in Greek is Barnard’s motto, “Following the Way of Reason.”

Echoing a custom of the Middle Ages, it says in Latin on the reverse, Me Gerit Praeses, “The President of Barnard College wears me.”

Debora L. Spar, on behalf of the Board of Trustees, before the company here assembled, it is my honor to have presented to you the insignia of your office. We hereby entrust to you the administration of Barnard College with the greatest pride and confidence.
