INAUGURAL REMARKS

Call to Order
Elizabeth S. Boylan, Provost and Dean of the Faculty

It is my privilege to call to order this ceremony to inaugurate Debora L. Spar as the eleventh leader of Barnard College.  We welcome everyone to magnificent Riverside Church, one of our sister institutions on Morningside Heights.

We extend special greetings to President Spar’s family and friends; the presidents and representatives of colleges, universities and philanthropic foundations; and delegates from learned societies.

We come together -- the alumnae, students, faculty, staff and friends of Barnard College -- to honor the achievements of President Spar, and to attest our faith and hope in her leadership.

We appreciate greatly the presence of President Lee Bollinger and his Columbia colleagues who mark this important transition with us and who continue to uphold and advance our unique academic partnership.

Let us take a moment to acknowledge with profound thanks the former presidents of Barnard who are here with us today:  Judith Shapiro, Kathryn Rogers and Ellen Futter.  Their vision and ambition for this college have raised its prospects and touched us all.

Now please welcome Eric Yoffie, President of the Union for Reform Judaism and a friend of President Spar’s, who will lead us in the Invocation.
