Þ  WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR SPRING 2010  Ü

To:                          All Barnard Students who will be returning in the Spring Term 2010

From:                     Constance A. Brown, Registrar

Re:                          PLANNING AND FILING 2010 SPRING TERM PROGRAMS

Who, when, how?

All returning students must file programs online, approved by their advisers online, by 6:00 pm on Monday, November 23.  Students may begin entering courses online on Wednesday, November 4, at 10 a.m.

What important material should all students read?

This memo and the information about Barnard limited-enrollment courses (courses for which students enter a lottery, submit a writing sample, need permission from the department or instructor, must be present on the first day, etc.). This list is posted on our website, and the information is also in eBear Comments and Reminders.

What if a student is now or will be on study leave?

If you will not be at Barnard in Spring 2010 because you will be studying elsewhere (study leave or a BC/CU program), you must file the appropriate paperwork by November 23. Students currently on approved study leave may file their programs online (or through Dean Young), are subject to slightly different procedures, and are not subject to the late fee.

What happens to a student who does not file an approved program by November 23?

·         A student who does not file a program in November will be assumed to be planning to withdraw from the College.

·         A student who files a program after November 23 will be subject to a progressive fine (the amount increases each week, peaking at $250).

·         A program filed without the adviser's approval will be considered invalid.  See your adviser!

·         A student who fails to file a program in November may be closed out of courses at Barnard and Columbia.

Which adviser should approve a program?

DOUBLE MAJORS: Both advisers must approve your program online.

MAJORS WITH COLUMBIA ADVISERS:  Every Computer Science and Statistics major should obtain online approval from her adviser and from her Barnard class dean.

If you are a SECOND-SEMESTER SOPHOMORE: Schedule a conference with your original adviser to go over your audit and discuss a major.  Declare your major by November 16.  Your new major adviser should approve your program.

When does a student need her Class Dean’s approval?

·         Students are expected to file full-time programs.  To file a part-time program (under 12 points), you must have a compelling reason and your Class Dean’s approval.

·         Any student wishing to take over 18 points must have her Class Dean’s approval in January.

What courses cannot be put on advance programs at all?

·         Physical Education.  The PE lottery will take place on eBear January 20-22.  Information and instructions will be available in January.

·         Music BC1502 (voice).   Students may audition in January, if any places are open.

·         Columbia’s Literature Humanities, Art Humanities, Music Humanities, Contemporary Civilization, and Physical Education.  Instrumental lessons at Columbia.  Music lessons at Manhattan School of Music or Juilliard.  All require special procedures in January.

·         Columbia Visual Arts courses (attend class in January).   All Art History seminars (application due 11/20 or 11/30; see the CU Art History department web site).

·         Courses with any time overlap.  eBear will not allow you to enter courses that overlap.

What courses cannot be taken by Barnard students?

·         Film courses not listed in the Columbia College online catalogue.

·         Professional-school courses and graduate courses at the 6000 level and higher.  (Students may take advanced graduate courses with the approval of instructor and adviser.  See other side for information about some professional-school courses.)

·         If Barnard students may take any of the Business K courses in Finance, information will be available in January.  Barnard students may not take Leadership in Organization, Intro to Marketing/Management, Options and Futures, Managing Human Behavior, or Security Analysis.

“L” Courses

Sign up for L courses through eBear, November 16-20.Your appointment times will be listed the previous week (L signup will be in order of class standing: seniors have their first appointment times on Monday, juniors on Tuesday, sophomores on Wednesday, first-years on Thursday). Pay close attention to the information on the screen on eBear; read the comments and instructions, and scroll down the page.

What other courses require special procedures?

Barnard courses with applications, lotteries, etc. Read the Comments and Reminders on eBear and the list on our web site.

Graduate Business School courses, 6000 and above, prefixed B, open only to qualified seniors with a B average; a cross-registration form must be obtained and filed with Dean Schneider in January.

Journalism School courses, prefixed J, are open only to seniors.  Consult Dean Schneider in January.

Teachers College Courses: Secure an application from the Registrar's Office, obtain the proper signatures, and return the completed form to Dean Blank. Tuition is charged at the rate of $1,127 per point, over and above Barnard tuition.

Jewish Theological Seminary Courses:  For courses not on the approved list (see Dean Blank), approvals of the corresponding department chair and your adviser are required on a form available at the Registrar's Office.  These courses are not entered on your Barnard program.

SIPA Courses: Secure approval in January from Dean Runsdorf and from SIPA.

What other limits and restrictions do students need to know?

Two-point courses do not fulfill minor or general education requirements but may be used as electives.  In special          instances, e.g., Art History (Visual Arts), a two-point course may fulfill a major requirement.

Variable-point courses.  If you should receive more than the lowest number of points, come to the Registrar’s Office in January and fill out a form.

Studio credit.  Be sure not to exceed the limit of four visual arts courses, six dance technique courses, and six courses in vocal or instrumental instruction.  Majors in these areas are allowed additional courses for credit.  See the online Catalogue under Majors and Electives for the full policy.

Credit for PE.  Students who entered in fall 2003 or thereafter may receive credit for PE or dance technique, 1 point per semester, for a maximum of 2 points (maximum 1 point for transfer students), to fulfill the PE requirement.

Dance technique courses.  Students who entered in fall 2003 or thereafter may receive additional credit for dance technique only if they have completed or are concurrently completing the PE requirement.  If you think you are entitled to a point of credit for dance, come to the Registrar’s Office in January when you are ready to file your final program, and fill out a form.

Physical Education.  To avoid an F in Physical Education, first-year students must complete one semester in their first year.  The two‑semester requirement must be successfully completed by the end of the junior year.  Transfer students must complete the requirement by the end of the junior year.  Be sure to enter any PE course, or varsity sport, on your eBear program in January.

Note:  Professor Applegate’s section of ASTR C1404 does not satisfy Barnard’s quantitative reasoning requirement.

What else should students think about before filing programs?

Check your progress towards the degree requirements, described in the online Catalogue.  Note that there is a Course Catalogue icon on the eBear program screen.  Consult your online audit.

What should students do if they have questions about policies and procedures?

Ask the Registrar’s Office.  Call us at 42011.  Visit our web site.  Send email to registrar@barnard.edu.
