® ONLINE REGISTRATION—FALL 2009¬
¬ ¬
¬
The dates for online registration
are September 2 - 9, around the clock. If you are unable to
complete registration by September 9, come in person to the
Registrar’s Office, 107 Milbank; there will be a
(progressive) late fee after September 9.
You must register through eBear.
You need a valid Barnard email login and password. If you do
not know your Barnard email password, go (with your ID) to
the Help Desk on the first floor of the Barnard library.
You must register from a computer
on the Barnard or Columbia campus. Registration is the means
by which you verify that you are enrolled at the college and
that you have cleared any holds, and you must be on
Morningside Heights to confirm your presence.
To register: Log into eBear.
Select the blue Registration tab at the top (if you
are not already on that page). Click on the green
Registration on the navy blue title bar below the tabs.
Click on the green Registration on the left. (You
will be informed if you have holds. Click on the green
Registration Holds on the left to see your holds and
where you need to go to clear them.) You will then see a new
screen, welcoming you to Online Registration. Click on the
button at the bottom to begin registering. Use the buttons
at the bottom of subsequent screens to move from form to
form. The last screen will tell you that you have completed
the process.
MAILBOXES: EVERY STUDENT has a
mailbox in Altschul. Your box number and combination are
available on eBear. ALL MAIL (both United States and
internal) will be distributed in Altschul. CHECK YOUR
MAILBOX REGULARLY.

® PROGRAM FILING—SEPTEMBER 2009¬
¬ ¬
¬
ALL ACADEMIC CLASSES begin on
Tuesday, September 8. Program-filing opens on Friday,
September 4, at 10 am. The program-filing deadline is 4:30
pm, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 18.
What do students need to do
before filing programs?
- Take a language placement exam, if
appropriate. The Barnard Spanish placement
exam is online on eBear. Barnard French and
German examinations were given September 4.
Exams in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean were
given September 3 and 4. Hebrew was given
September 1 - 2; Arabic, September 3 - 4.
Italian was given September 1 and 3. Greek
and Latin: Consult Prof. Helene Foley, 216
Milbank. Russian (and other Slavic
languages): Go to 708 Hamilton.
- Follow special procedures for the
following:
- Voice lessons (Music BC1501). If you
wish to take voice lessons, you must attend
a tryout on Wednesday, September 9, or
Thursday, September 10, starting at 6 p.m.
in 405 Milbank. Pick up a form from, and
return it to, 319 Milbank before the tryout.
To qualify for a tryout, students must be
able to teach themselves a song from a
printed musical score.
- Lessons at MSM or Juilliard. Students
who have passed auditions at Juilliard or
Manhattan must file a special form
with the Registrar every semester by the
program-filing deadline.
- Columbia core courses. If you wish to
enroll in one of the Columbia core courses
(Humanities C1001 or C1002, or Contemporary
Civilization C1101 or C1102), see Dean
Blank, but be aware that very few
spaces are available. For other limited
enrollment Columbia courses, see item 4.
- L courses. Enrollment in limited courses
(courses with a "maximum enrollment" listed
on the online Directory of Classes) is now
done on eBear. Pay close attention to the
information on the screen, including the
appointment times for L signup.
- JTS courses. If you plan to take a
course at the Jewish Theological Seminary,
see Dean Blank for the list of approved
courses. JTS work is counted toward the
allowable maximum for transfer credit toward
the degree. (Register and pay tuition at the
Seminary—do not include JTS courses on your
Barnard program.)
- Physical Education. The lottery on eBear
for Barnard PE will take place from 9 am on
Wednesday, September 9, through noon on
Friday, September 11. Results will be posted
on eBear at 5 pm on Friday, September 11. PE
classes begin Monday, September 14. Be sure
to list any PE course, or a varsity
sport, on your program.
- Dance technique courses taken to fulfill
the PE requirement receive academic credit
(for students who entered in fall 2003 or
later). Students may not receive additional
credit for dance technique until the PE
requirement has been or is concurrently
being completed. No student may receive
credit for the same level of technique more
than twice, or for a lower level technique
course after receiving credit for a higher
level. If you believe you should receive a
point of credit for a dance technique
course, complete the form available at the
Registrar’s Office.
- Attend class. Consult the online
DIRECTORY OF CLASSES for the location of
your classes.
What courses need special
approvals?
- If you wish to do an independent study,
you must submit a form to the Registrar’s
Office, by the program-filing deadline, for
review by the Committee on Programs and
Academic Standing.
- SIPA courses need Dean Runsdorf’s
permission and permission from SIPA.
- See Dean Schneider for procedures for
Journalism School courses (open only to
seniors) and for graduate Business School
courses, 6000-level and above (also open
only to seniors and limited to one course
per term).
- Teachers College courses. You must file
an application approved by Dean Blank.
Tuition is charged at the rate of $1,127
per point over and above Barnard tuition.
What courses cannot be taken
by Barnard students?
- Film courses not listed in the online
Columbia College Bulletin.
- Professional-school courses (except
those mentioned above) and graduate courses
at the 6000 level and higher, which students
may take only with the approval of
instructor and adviser.
- Barnard students may not take
Business W3020/W3021 or W3701 or any of the
Business K courses. Barnard students may
take Business W3013 (Financial Accounting)
if spaces are available.
Which students need approval
from Class Dean as well as
adviser/s?
- Students with part-time (under 12
points) programs or programs over 18 points.
- Students with Columbia majors (Computer
Science, Statistics).
What problems should
students and advisers look
out for?
- Variable-point courses. If you are
taking such a course for more than the
lowest number of points, you must come to
this office and submit a form with the
correct number of points.
- Do not exceed the allowable number of
studio points.
See
online Catalogue under Majors and Electives.
Duplicate credit: a repeated course or
work repeated at the same level or work
equivalent to AP credit. Be especially
careful if you have AP credit for calculus,
science, or language.
Note: Professor Applegate’s section of
ASTR C1403 does not satisfy Barnard’s
quantitative reasoning requirement.

issues
