Applying for Housing


Note: Students who have a guarantee of housing and are awaiting assignment may receive a pre-bill for housing at the multiple room rate. If the student is later assigned to a single room, the difference in price between the single and multiple room ($530 for 08/09) will be assessed to her account at the time of assignment.


Incoming First Year students

Please fill out the online housing application (on eBear) that is part of the online Matriculation packet.

Assignment information is distributed via email in early August for the Fall semester. Please refer to our calendar for move-in dates.


Incoming Transfer students (Fall & Spring)

Please fill out the online housing application (on eBear) that is part of the online Matriculation packet.

Assignment information is distributed via email in mid- August for the Fall semester and early January for the Spring semester. Please refer to our calendar for move-in dates.


Visiting International Student (VIS) Program

Please fill out and submit the Visiting International Student Housing Application form (PDF) no later December 1 for the Spring semester. Application forms may be faxed to 212-854-1561, mailed to Residential Life & Housing / 110 Sulzberger / 3009 Broadway / NY, NY 10027, or attached to an email to housing@barnard.edu.

Rising-Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors

Returning students take part in the Room Selection process in early spring to select a room for the following academic year. Note: you must be residing in on-campus housing for the Spring semester (or have lived on-campus prior to leaving for an approved study abroad leave) to take part in Room Selection.

If you do not take part in Room Selection and wish later to apply for housing, you should submit a Housing Application (PDF) no later than July 1. Please note that students who do not participate in Room Selection do not have a guarantee for receiving a housing assignment.


Students returning from Study Abroad

Returning to campus for the Fall semester:

Please make sure that you choose a Barnard student to be your proxy and submit the Proxy Form (PDF) no later than March 1. Your proxy will select a room for you during Room Selection. Note: you must have been residing in on-campus housing prior to your study abroad leave in order to be eligible to participate in Room Selection.

If you do not have a proxy select a room for you and wish later to apply for housing, please submit the Housing Application form (PDF) no later than July 5. Please note that if you do not select a room during Room Selection, you lose your guarantee of housing placement.

Returning to campus for the Spring semester:

If there is a specific room/suite you would like to live in, please specify on your application. Please have the roommate(s) / suitemates fill out and submit the Roommate / Suitemate Request Form (PDF) mutually requesting you for their room / suite.

Students readmitted to the College

Please fill out and submit the Housing Application form (PDF) no later than July 1 for the Fall semester and December 1 for the Spring semester. Application forms may be faxed to 212-854-1561 or mailed to Residential Life & Housing / 110 Sulzberger / 3009 Broadway / NY, NY 10027.

Please submit the application even if you are still waiting for official confirmation of your readmission (your assignment will be held until your readmission status is confirmed).

If there is a specific room/suite you would like to live in, please specify on your application. Please have the roommate(s) / suitemates fill out and submit the Roommate / Suitemate Request Form (PDF) mutually requesting you for their room / suite.

Please note that while we attempt to assign all applicants, housing is not guaranteed for students classified as commuters.
