Check Out Procedures & Deadlines
All Barnard residence halls close on Saturday, May 16, at 2pm (10am for Sulzberger Hall).
- Students who are not graduating are required to complete their move out by this date & time.
- Students who are graduating will be required to move out by Thursday, May 21, at 5pm.
After students have moved out their belongings and cleaned their room, they will be required to complete a check out form and envelope at their residence hall front desk. As part of completing the check out form, students will be required to remove the residence hall sticker from their ID (and stick it to the form). Students will put the completed form and their room key(s) in the check out envelope and give it to the Front Desk attendant. Please note that students who do not return their keys and/or complete a check out form / envelope will be charged for an improper check out.
Students living in suite-style residence halls will additionally be required to complete a suite checkout form (available from your RA). This form ensures that all suitemates will equally help in cleaning common areas of the suite before moving out.
Students are required to return their room to the same condition it was in when they moved in (including cleaning their room and/or moving furniture back to original positions). Residential Life & Housing staff will inspect rooms after move out to ensure that students have done so, using the Room (& Suite) Condition Reports filled out during check in. Please note that any damages and/or needed cleaning will be charged to students’ accounts.
Requests For Extensions
Under extenuating circumstances, students may request an extension to move out at a later time / date. These extensions are extremely limited and are not automatically approved.
Approved extensions will result in a cost of $100 per night for any extension past 1 day. Please note that students currently living in Sulzberger, CG, Elliott, Hewitt, and 600 will be required to relocate to a temporary Reid or Brooks double room by 2pm (10am for Sulzberger) on Saturday, May 16, in order to accommodate their approved extension (no exceptions).
To request an extension, please email your Associate Director (see http://barnard.edu/reslife/contact/ for email addresses) the following information no later than 2pm on Friday, May 8:
- Your name, Student ID, and class year
- Your current building & room
- Your cellphone number and Barnard email address
- Date/time through which you are requesting an extension
- Reason for your request (attach supporting documentation, ex. international flight information, email from coach noting competition dates past closing, serving as Junior Marshall for graduation, etc).
Extensions cannot be approved past 5pm on Thursday, May 21. Any student requesting to stay past May 21 would be required to apply & pay for Summer Housing.
Upon reviewing your extension request, your Associate Director will contact you via email to let you know if your request was approved or denied. Please note that students who fail to move out after being denied an extension request (or who did not request an extension) will be fined $100 per night and/or a minimum of $500 for the removal of their belongings from campus.
Parking & Carts
For a list of parking garages and rates, please visit http://nyc.bestparking.com (select "Daily", then click "By Neighborhood," and then select "Morningside Heights"). For more parking information, visit http://www.barnard.edu/visitors/parking.html.
A limited number of carts will be available for check-out from the front desk of each residence hall. A $20 CASH deposit and a photo ID is required to borrow a cart for one hour.
Summer Storage
Residential Life & Housing recommends the Packing & Shipping Network (summerstorage.org) for summer storage.
We discourage students from using CollegeBoxes.com, based on many negative student experiences in the past. This company has been banned from the Barnard campus.
Please note that there is no storage available on campus for belongings.
Mail Forwarding (or, Keeping Your Mailbox Open Over the Summer)
For information about forwarding the mail from your Altschul box over the summer, visit http://www.barnard.edu/offsvcs/forwarding.html. If you are going to be living on campus (or in the city) for the summer and wish to keep your mailbox open over the summer, you must fill out a "Keep Mailbox Open" form at the Mail Services Window in Altschul.
Give & Go Green! (Environmentally-Friendly Move-OUT)
Each year, Barnard students donate unwanted items (clothing, food, household goods, electronics, etc) to local charities. There will be donation centers located in each residence hall during the week of final exams. Last year we were able to make large donations to the Salvation Army, a children’s art initiative, and a food shelter. Please join the EcoReps and Residential Life & Housing in this great cause by donating items.
Returning Refrigerator Rentals
If you rented a refrigerator from Cecil Distributors, you must return the fridge on Sunday, May 10. They will be picking the fridges up from in front of Sulzberger (Main Gate) from 9-11:30am and in Elliott Lobby from 12:30-2pm.
To extend rental for one or both summer sessions, please call 718-267-6484 at least 72 hours prior to return or email Info@Cecildistributors.com.
Please note that refrigerators must be returned defrosted (unplug the refrigerator, open the door for at least 24 hours, and let the refrigerator defrost naturally). Under no circumstances should you chip away at ice in the fridge as the walls of the fridge are hollow and puncture easily (and will result in a fine).
Please note the Residential Life & Housing cannot allow Cecil Distributors or any other vendors into your room. If you will not be present on Sunday, May 10, you must make arrangements for a friend to have your refrigerator and turn it in.
Returning Cable TV Boxes
If you signed up for cable with Time Warner Cable, you must contact them to cancel your cable TV service and to return your cable box. Residential Life & Housing cannot return your cable box for you.
