Using Pine to Delete Emails

  1. At the “$” sign, type in “Pine” and press Enter.

  2. Enter Pine: You will have to enter in your username and password.
    • Note: Your password will not show up as you type it in.

  3. Open your inbox: To get to Inbox, highlight over “Folder List” like shown above and press enter. Then highlight over “Inbox” and press enter.

  4. Highlight the desired message(s), press “D”, and then press “Enter”. (This will mark the email(s) as “deleted”. Note the “D” next to the message).
    • You screen should look like this:

  5. Press “M” to return to the main menu and press “Q” to quit pine. When it asks, “Really quit pine?”, type “Y” and then press enter.

  6. At this point, PINE will ask if you want to "expunge the [#] deleted message from "inbox"?". Type "Y" for Yes and press enter.
    • Note: "Inbox" is the folder from which I deleted an email. If you deleted messages in your "Sent" folder, it will say "Sent". Also, you MUST expunge for your quota to be freed.

Tips to Quicken the Process:

  1. Delete the emails that take up the most space: When you’re in the folder which you want to delete, type “$” then “Z”. This will order your emails by size.
  2. Delete all messages in folder: If you would like to delete all the messages in a folder, open the folder and type in “;” then type “A” for apply all. Then type in “A” again and then type “D” for delete.
