Network Device Information

Barnard College provides one network jack per student in the residence halls to allow resident students to connect their computers to the Barnard network. Residents are not permitted to plug any other devices (hub, router, access point, Xbox, Airport, etc) into a Barnard College network jack unless they get their device approved and configured by an ACE.

In recent academic years, privately installed network devices have interfered with network service in the residence halls. An improperly configured device can block nearby computers from connecting to the Barnard network. This affects the academic work of your fellow students and is therefore considered a serious infraction.

Students who install network devices without approval will have that device removed from the Barnard network. The student who registers a network device will be held accountable for any problems or activity through that access point. The College is not responsible for the performance of these devices.

To schedule an appointment, fill out the online Network Device Approval Form. We will arrange an appointment via email. When you come in for your appointment, please bring: your laptop, the network device, all of the documentation, cables, and any CDs that came with the device.

Please be aware that if your Network Device cannot be configured in accordance with our security standards, you will not be allowed to connect the device in the Residence Halls.
