Everyone gets spam these days, and there are few things more annoying than an inbox clogged with spam. Medical scams, trading tips, phishing attempts, and bogus sales offers can make checking your email a real pain. Even worse, some emails that look legitimate or seem to be from family or friends may actually contain viruses and spyware. NEVER open an attachment without verifying its contents and NEVER give out any personal information or financial assistance over email.
Management Information and Network Services (MINS) uses Clam AntiVirus and other programs to filter and block spam. Only 10% of the spam sent to Barnard email addresses actually gets through! Learn more on the MINS Email Virus and Attachment Filtering Policy page. To find more information about spam at Barnard, visit the Academic Technologies Spam and Annoying Emails page.
Each email you receive in your Barnard inbox receives a spam score based on how likely it is to be spam. The legitimate emails you receive are usually marked "not spam" and "whitelisted." You can see the spam score of an email by clicking "View Full Header" in Webmail.
X-Barnard-MailScanner-SpamCheck: not spam (whitelisted), SpamAssassin (score=0.276, required 5, MAILTO_TO_SPAM_ADDR 0.28)
Other emails will receive low spam scores, which will be indicated by one to four s's.
X-Barnard-MailScanner-SpamCheck: not spam, SpamAssassin (score=2.834, required 5, PYZOR_CHECK 2.83)
X-Barnard-MailScanner-SpamScore: ss
If an email receives five to six s's, it is probably spam, but there is a small chance it might not be, so the email is still delivered to your inbox.
X-Barnard-MailScanner-SpamCheck: spam, SpamAssassin (score=6.854, required 5, FORGED_MUA_OUTLOOK 3.36, HG_HORMONE 1.47, HTML_MESSAGE 0.00, MSGID_FROM_MTA_ID 0.93, URIBL_SBL 1.09)
X-Barnard-MailScanner-SpamScore: ssssss
If an email receives a score of seven or above s's, it never makes it to your inbox.
You can take advantage of this scoring system by setting up an email filter on your account. To do so in Webmail, click Options, at the top, and then choose Message Filters. Click New.
And you're all set! Just make sure to check your Trash or spam folder periodically for legitimate emails!
