Featuring members of the Barnard-Columbia Chorus and Chamber Choir, this year’s concert includes Rachmaninoff’s masterful Vespers. The vespers setting is music for a nightlong service celebrated in Russian monasteries and, on the eves of holy days, in Russian Orthodox churches. Rachmaninoff composed the work in just two weeks in the winter of 1915 and premiered it in Moscow on March 10, 1915 at a concert to raise funds for war relief. Vespers is considered the finest of Rachmaninoff’s sacred works and the greatest musical achievement of the Russian Orthodox tradition. Join us in welcoming the festive holiday season. Reception to follow.
