Your Education Beyond Barnard: Combined Plan, Graduate Study, Pre-Professional Study

Graduate study can take many forms, and one of the first places to turn to for advice can be your academic major department. The Dean of Studies Office can also help guide you towards choosing the right path, and give some general advice. If you are unsure about the kind of postgraduate training you might need for a particular career, make an appointment to see a counselor in the Office of Career Development.

Some graduate programs may require the GRE examinations; we recommend visiting www.ets.org/gre for further details.

The Dean of Studies Office can give students and alumnae support throughout their process of considering pre-professional academic graduate programs, such as law school, business school, or the pre-health professional schools, including medical school. Make an appointment with  to discuss these pathways to the professions.

Students interested in the Combined Plan Program with Columbia's Fu School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) should also make an appointment with the Dean of Studies. We encourage those students to take a look at our worksheet on Requisite Coursework for the Combined Plan (see below), and to view the following websites for further information:

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE COMBINED DEGREE PROGRAM

PLEASE NOTE: All major requirements (and general education requirements) must be completed by your final semester at Barnard.  If applying for the 3-2 Plan, all requirement for the Barnard degree must be completed with the exception of your senior thesis/capstone (if required by major).  If applying for the 4-2 Plan, all requirements for the Barnard degree must be completed.

In order to apply for the Combined Degree Program, ALL STUDENTS must complete the following by their final semester at Barnard:

27 non-Engineering credit hours (includes the English and Economics courses below) = All Barnard credits (general education requirements, Barnard major requirements, etc.)  AND
