Immigrant students in the U.S. face a unique set of challenges as they adjust to their new educational settings. By studying the academic trajectories of ethnically diverse adolescent immigrants, Carola Suárez-Orozco examines the complex combination of factors—from segregation and poverty rates, to parental education and employment, to gender and English proficiency—that shape and determine their educational experiences. Carola Suárez-Orozco is a professor of applied psychology and co-director of immigration studies at New York University. She is the author, most recently, of the prize-winning Learning a New Land: Immigrant Students in American Society.
