BCRW Director Janet Jakobsen and HBO's Sheila Nevins '60 comment on the legacy of Gloria Steinem

An article in  The New York Times highlights "Gloria: In Her Own Words," an upcoming HBO documentary series about Gloria Steinem and the era she helped define. "We made it for the kids on the floor who didn’t know who she was,"  Shelia Nevins '60, president of HBO's documentary division, told the Times.

Janet Jakobsen, director of the Barnard Center for Research on Women, is also quoted.  An excerpt from the article:

"Although Ms. Steinem has often been singled out for her work in the women’s movement of the 1970s, she was just one of many leaders, “incredibly important” but not a singular force, said Janet Jakobsen, director of the Barnard Center for Research on Women, at Barnard College, who noted that Ms. Steinem herself has often fought against that perception of her role. “Focusing only on her takes a very complicated movement and narrows it,” Ms. Jakobsen added.

Nevertheless, “she’s a very important person,” Ms. Jakobsen said. “One of the things that is impressive about her is the longevity of her activity and presence, and she has also been very dedicated to mentoring several cohorts of younger feminists,” work that continues today."
