"The Roman Cross" by Taylor Fisch

Colosseum, Rome, Italy

Taken November 2013

This photo was taken at the Colosseum during my trip to Rome. It was remarkable to be at the Colosseum, a structure that was originally built during the Ancient Roman Empire. Visiting the Colosseum allowed me to understand the ancient culture better and how the Roman games were such an integral part of their culture. This particular image, with the cross at its center, is symbolic of the changing functions of the Colosseum into a place of religious practice several hundreds years later.

"Star of David" by Taylor Fisch

Auschwitz-Birkenau, Poland

Taken November 2013

This photo was taken at the end of my tour of Auschwitz Birkenau. Throughout my study abroad in Prague and my visits to other countries in Eastern Europe, I was constantly reminded of the devastation that occurred during World War II, specifically the Holocaust. My visit to Auschwitz was an incredible experience, both intellectually and personally. One cannot fully grasp the severity of the conditions and the colossal number of people that perished without seeing the camps with their own eyes. This image of the star of david reef at the end of the train track resides at the memorial on the camp and is symbolic of the hope for humanity.
