Well-Woman is the health promotion program and wellness center at Barnard College. Our mission is to promote the health and wellness of Barnard students through a variety of programming activities. Our philosophical approach to wellness focuses on an integration of body, mind and spirit, which moves us toward a more proactive, healthier existence. We use as our model the Wellness Wheel which includes physical, intellectual, occupational, emotional, social and spiritual, service and cultural dimensions which represent all aspects of human growth. The open center of the wellness wheel reflects the notion that each "spoke" impacts on the others and that we cannot be truly healthy if we neglect any aspect of the wheel. However, it is important to remember that gaining total wellness is a journey and a process that continues throughout life.
Well-Woman hosts a series of workshops offered throughout the academic year. Read through our workshop offerings.
The Well-Woman Office has a wide variety of resources including health newsletters, books, journals, magazines and brochures. We also maintain a DVD and video library. Read through our resources.
Jessica Cannon, Ed.M, Coordinator of Health Promotion and Education, BC '03: Jessica has been passionate about women’s health since she began reading “women’s” magazines at age twelve. Coming to Barnard in the fall of 1999 from Virginia, Jessica discovered Well-Woman during First Year Orientation and fell in love. A peer educator for 2 years, she especially enjoyed promoting positive body image and belonging to a group that spoke so openly and positively about sex. Jessica was thrilled to return to Barnard, dividing her time between the Well-Woman office and Primary Care, and is always happy to speak with students about any aspect of wellness. Just ask! She can be reached at email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org.
The peer educators are Barnard Students who volunteer to provide information to the Barnard and Columbia communities about a range of health and wellness issues. The peer education program began at Barnard in 1986. Well-Woman was established in 1993 to bring together per-existing small, topical peer educator groups to form one comprehensive group
