Funding & Sponsored Research for Faculty
Funding & Sponsored Research for Faculty
Introduction to Institutional Funding and Sponsored Research
Institutional Funding and Sponsored Research are responsible for all grant applications submitted by Barnard College and/or its faculty members to foundation, corporate, and government sources. We are part of the Development and Alumnae Relations team and work closely with the Office of the Provost.
Our team provides support in the entire application process
-
We research and identify funding opportunities tailored to specific faculty or program needs.
-
We maintain collegial relationships with key staff at foundations and program officers in government funding agencies.
-
We work with faculty and administration to strategize applications and develop strong proposals that comply with government and foundation criteria.
-
We assist in developing tight budgets and gathering required documentation.
-
We usually place the final submission.
-
Post-award, we continue to provide guidance in compliance issues and reporting in coordination with the Senior Associate Director, Post-Award Administration and Compliance Officer.
-
We complete interim and final reports for institutional grants, and work collaboratively with faculty members, Post-Award, and Finance on sponsored grants
We publish a newsletter and maintain a Grants Calendar, both of which can be found on the Barnard website, along with other policy documents and forms required for compliance.
If you are a Barnard faculty member and are interested in receiving our newsletter on grant opportunities, please email grantopportunities@barnard.edu.
Frequently Asked Questions
For more information, see here.
Barnard College requires you to come through our office for all external funded projects whether or not a funding agency requires institutional submission. It’s also to your advantage to have us help you with the proposal requirements and submission. Every proposal must be approved by our Provost and Dean of the Faculty, Linda A. Bell, at least three (ideally, four) days before the grant deadline.
Yes, but it's short and easy to find here. We ask that all applicants fill out a grant or fellowship routing form so that Barnard is aware of all space and compliance requirements that may attend your grant award. That form, along with a copy of your proposal and budget, should be submitted to Provost Bell a week before the funder's deadline. The Sponsored Research office can help you usher the process.
The earlier the better! Whether you’re just starting to look for funding opportunities or have already identified a grant opportunity, please stop by our office in the Interchurch Center, Suite 1320, or send us an email to set up a meeting (contact info here). The sooner we can help you the better we can help you.
We are happy to help however we can and in whatever way suits your needs. We find relevant grant opportunities for faculty. We aid in the grant application process from the abstract to submitting the proposal. If you need help with creating the budget, we will sit down with you and crunch the numbers. On your narrative we can help with everything from brainstorming the best approach to finding those random typos. Our office also presents useful grants workshops. Reach out to us (contacts here) or find out more on the IFSR Staff page.
It's best to communicate with the funder's program officers directly. We recommend contacting them early in the process and following up with them regarding your proposal as questions arise. We’re happy to help you find answers to your questions as well. However, it serves you well to establish rapport with the program officer from the get go. Often, direct conversations yield opportunities to ask further questions or gather unexpected insights and information.
It’s always best to submit early to avoid the last minute rush. We suggest you be prepared to submit your proposal to the funder three days before the deadline, especially in the case of an electronic submission. To meet this target date, Provost Bell should sign the grant routing form a week or so before the deadline. By submitting early, we can address any technical glitches or errors that happen during submission (which are more common than you would think).
