In Africa, the Office of International Programs has approved Study Abroad programs in Botswana, Cameroon, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Namibia, Niger, Senegal, South Africa, and Tanzania.
Barnard participates in a Visiting International Students Program (VISP) Partnership with the University of Ghana.
In March 2011, Barnard hosted its annual Global Symposium in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Selected Barnard faculty research is being conducted on material from the Congo and Nigeria.
Recently, a Barnard faculty member took students on short term research trips to Ghana.

As the result of an awarded Tow Fellowship, Mollie Van Gordon, Barnard College '09, spent three months in Burkina Faso, conducting research related to women and the environment. Working with Reciproka, a local organization that works on environmental issues, education, and culture, Mollie was able to examine the activities of informal rural associations, small NGOs, government agencies, and international organizations.
