May Interim

May Interim is intended to provide housing for students who live too far away from campus to go home between the end of the Spring semester and the start of Summer Housing. May Interim is not to provide storage space for students' belongings so they may leave campus.

At the end of the academic year students are normally expected to check-out within 24 hours of their final exam, or by no later than 5pm on Friday, May 10, 2024 (whichever is earlier). Students who are approved for May Interim may stay after their exams; however, they will need to abide by the 24-hours Exam Week Quiet Hours. Any policy violations during this time may result in permission to remain in housing after their last exam, for May Interim, and/or Summer Housing being revoked.

Eligibility

May Interim Interim housing may be available to Barnard (& Columbia students) who meet the following requirements:

  • Currently living in a Barnard residence hall for the Spring semester
  • In good standing with the College / University
  • Completed application for Barnard Full Summer or Block A (or Columbia Summer Block A*)

Students living in Columbia residence halls for the Spring semester must apply for May Interim Housing through CU Housing Services. Columbia students living in a Barnard residence hall for the Spring semester may apply for May Interim Housing through Barnard.

Students who cancel Summer Housing will cease to be eligible for May Interim Housing and cancellation fees may apply.

* If you will be in Columbia Summer Housing for Block A, you must forward confirmation to housing@barnard.edu by 1pm Friday, April 26, 2024. Otherwise, your request for May Interim housing cannot be considered.

The charge for May Interim Housing is $599.

  • Students with approved programmatic extensions past May 10, 2024 (ex. Junior Marshals), will be charged a prorated amount of $66.50 per night between the approved extension date and the end of May Interim.
  • For example, a student approved to help work at University Commencement with a check-out deadline of May 16, 2024 would be charged for 3 nights ($199.50) to stay for the remainder of the May Interim period.
  • May Interim housing is not automatically provided to any student without applying.

Students will receive a Summer bill in early May and payment is due to the Bursar's office by the deadline they provide.

Columbia students approved for May Interim housing must pay by check payable to BARNARD COLLEGE by May 6, 2024.

Students approved for May Interim housing will be required to stay on campus for the entire time. The interim period is not to provide storage for students’ belongings so they may leave campus.

Students who fail to move when required will be fined (minimum $500) to have their belongings removed from campus and are subject to disciplinary action (which could include the loss of May Interim and/or academic year housing).

Students will be required to move to a temporary, non-air-conditioned, shared double-occupancy room in the Quad in order to facilitate the cleaning of the residence halls for the Summer.

Students will be required to move out from their Spring room on Friday, May 10, 2024. The timeline for signing for new room keys and being moved out of your Spring room will be provided to students in early May.

Students living in Reid or Brooks whose roommates do not stay for May Interim will need to be prepared to receive a new randomly assigned roommate for the interim period.

Only the student may sign for their temporary room keys (not friends or family). Requests for specific roommates are not available and students will not be provided with a specific room assignment before signing for their keys at the Res Life office.

Note: students will be moving into Quad rooms that the academic year residents just moved out of. Timing does not permit these rooms to be cleaned before move-in for May Interim and this housing can only be provided on an as-is basis.

Students may start moving into their Barnard summer room assignments at 10am on Sunday, May 19, 2024.

If you are moving to Columbia summer housing, please check with CU Housing for move-in information.

All students must be completely moved out of their May Interim room (and turn in their room keys via a check-out envelope at their residence hall front desk) by no later than 5pm on Sunday, May 19, 2024.

  • There are no extensions to the May Interim check out deadline.
