Health & Safety Checks
The Residential Life & Housing office conducts Health & Safety checks once per semester to ensure the safety of our students and community. During these checks, staff will enter student spaces to address any concerns that may pose a danger to the residential community.
This commonly includes the possession of fire hazards (candles, extension cords, prohibited appliances, etc), prohibited substances, and damages to the room that have not been addressed by Facilities staff (leaks, broken windows, etc). Any life safety equipment (smoke detectors, fire extinguishers) and/or window guards that have been tampered with, disabled, or removed will result in fines and disciplinary action.
We strongly encourage students to review the list of items students may not possess in the residence halls at http://barnard.edu/reslife/policies/prohibited-items. If you happen to have items that are prohibited, please be sure to remove these items immediately by either sending them home or donating them to a local charity. Staff are required to confiscate any prohibited items and once an item has been confiscated, it will not be returned to the student.
We would like to thank you in advance for working with us to make our community a safer place for everybody to live. Your cooperation and grace while the H&S Checks are being conducted is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to your Community Director (CD), Residence Hall Coordinator (RHC), or the Res Life office. We're happy to answer any questions that you may have!
