Torchbearers 2013

The 2013 Torchbearers event was a great success, bringing together nearly 250 alumnae, trustees, parents, friends, and students. The annual event joined donors and student beneficiaries of scholarship, internship, and fellowship funds at Barnard and took place on February 27th in The Diana Center. President Debora L. Spar gave welcoming remarks, Marsha Corn Levine ’62 graciously spoke on behalf of donors, and Mariany Polanco ’13 reflected on her Barnard experience on behalf of students.

Dr. Marsha Corn Levine ’62 discussed how her Barnard education has served her throughout her life, how it motivated her to pursue a career in the education field and how it inspired her to establish a scholarship fund in support of Barnard students who have graduated from New York City public high schools.

Mariany Polanco ’13 discussed her journey at Barnard, her discovery of her academic strengths and interests, and her plans to work—throughout her career—to help others identify their calling. She spoke with deep appreciation about those donors who have helped her pursue her education at the College.

Barnard hosts the Torchbearers event to express gratitude to generous scholarship, internship, and fellowship donors, to congratulate outstanding student recipients of these funds, and to foster relationships between them. The event also allows the College to recognize an alumna and student speaker, each of whom represents the profound impact of Barnard women in various communities.
