On March 18, 2013, Barnard College and President Debora Spar hosted the fifth annual Barnard College Global Symposium, Women Changing Brazil. This day-long event, held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, gathered some of Brazil's most prominent women leaders in government, business, media, science, social activism, and the arts. Speakers included Panmela Castro, graffiti artist and activist; Maria Cristina Frias, columnist for Folha de São Paulo; Kátia Lund, film director and screenwriter; Adriana Machado, CEO of GE Brazil; Duilia de Mello, associate professor of Physics at the Catholic University of America; Eleonora Menicucci, Brazil’s Minister for Women’s Affairs; Mayra Avellar Neves, student activist and winner of the 2008 International Children’s Peace Prize; Monica Waldvogel, journalist and television current affairs host; and Mayana Zatz, professor of Human and Medical Genetics at the University of São Paulo.
