Learning on the Job: Student Jobs on Campus

Student employment at Barnard comes in many different forms, from lab assistants and library aids, to lifeguards and pilates instructors. Barnard’s Career Development office helps students find part-time jobs both on- and off-campus, and also administers the Barnard College Job and Federal Work-Study programs for more than 900 students.

In almost every academic and administrative department at Barnard, there are opportunities to learn valuable skills and get involved with research and other initiatives. Students receiving a Federal Work-Study award can also work in participating departments on Columbia's campus or in a variety of positions at off-campus, not-for-profit agencies, such as reading tutors for elementary-school children in the America Reads/America Counts program at Barnard. Additionally, Career Development advises two student-run agencies, the Barnard Babysitting Service and the Barnard Bartending Agency, both of which offer students the chance to gain managerial experience while also earning money on the job.
