A Statement on Clubs & Organizations

April 9th, 2013

To the Barnard College and Columbia University community,

It is with great pleasure that the Barnard College Student Government Association (SGA) announces the creation of the Governing Board at Barnard (GBB) to assume the role of club governance at Barnard. Historically, the SGA has served the Barnard community as both a student council and as a club governing board, trying to encompass the unique responsibilities of each. By creating a separate club governing board, which will function independently of the SGA, we will be able to provide our clubs with the resources and advocates they deserve.

As of April 12th, 2013 all clubs that are currently recognized by the SGA will instead be recognized and governed by the GBB. The recognition status of all SGA-recognized clubs will remain the same under the GBB, including Dually Recognized Groups, who will retain their current recognition status with both the GBB and the ABC.

The change in jurisdiction over clubs does not significantly affect the logistical details of running a club currently recognized by SGA or dually recognized with the ABC. All clubs will retain their current Student Life Advisors, and will continue to utilize the Barnard resources that have always been available to them. Moving forward, clubs will receive their allocations from the GBB and any changes to allocations will be within the same range as changes in years past.

The Executive Board of the GBB will be appointed through an applications process for the 2013-14 academic year. The board will be open to the entire undergraduate community regardless of school affiliation, a practice which will now be reciprocated by the ABC. In the future, all positions on the GBB will be elected by club leaders. Applications for the 2013-14 Executive Board of the GBB will be released on April 14th at 4PM and will be available at http://barnard.edu/sga/getinvolved.
We look forward to sharing additional details of the GBB with club leaders and any interested students on April 14th at 3PM in 203 Diana. Sarah Steinmann BC '13, the 2012-13 SGA Vice President for Student Activities, will make a formal presentation about the changes, and will host a question and answer session at that time as well.

As with any new initiative, details regarding the role and structure of the GBB will need to be addressed in the coming semesters. It is our sincere hope that club leaders will take an active role in shaping the GBB, both in GBB leadership positions and by providing feedback about their experience. We look forward to continued collaboration with our club leaders, ABC, Barnard's Student Life Office, and all members of our community as the GBB's role on campus is defined.

If you have any questions or feedback, we encourage you to email us at sga@barnard.edu or to stop by our office at 101 Diana (inside Liz's Place).

Sincerely,

The 2012-13 SGA Executive Board
JungHee Hyun, President
Julia Kennedy, VP for Student Government
Sarah Steinmann, VP for Student Activities
Malvina Kefalas, VP for Communications
Candace Fox, VP Finance
