Student's Rights & Responsibilities

The College administers its financial aid and loan programs, educational policies and programs, recreational and other College programs, and activities without regard to race, creed, color, national or ethnic origin, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, or disability.

All students are expected to conduct themselves in a manner compatible with the College’s mission as an educational institution and a community of students, scholars, and teachers. Common goals are to protect and respect each individual’s well-being and to enable us to live and work together with a minimum of conflict and a maximum of personal freedom. It is the right of each member of our community to attend, make use of, and enjoy the facilities and functions of the College without interference or disruption. Students’ failure to comply with these standards of conduct may result in discipline.

It is also each student’s responsibility to keep apprised of Barnard’s specific policies and regulations and local, state, and federal laws. Also, as members of the Columbia University community, Barnard students must comply with the Rules of University Conduct, which may be obtained in the Office of Student Life.

The rules and regulations summarized in the Student Code of Conduct or elsewhere in this handbook may be amended at any time without prior notice as deemed appropriate by the College.
