Standardized Exams

In order to apply to your health profesional program of choice, you will be required to take a standardized exam which may include one of the following:

Dental Admission Test (DAT)

General Entrance Exam (GRE)

Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)

Optometry Admission Test (OAT)

Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT)

MCAT

The MCAT is administered by the AAMC and is the standard medical school assessment of a student’s understanding of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. In April 2015, a new MCAT exam was launched to include concepts from Psychology and Sociology. For general information about the MCAT, students can visit the AAMC MCAT  which also contains specific information about the 2015 MCAT changes.

The Pre-Health Committee at Barnard has used the AAMC topic guidelines (shown here) to determine which courses on our campus provide coverage of the material on the 2015 MCAT. These courses are listed in the following table. They include some courses that are required for admission to many medical schools (as indicated by “Pre-health Requirement” and some additional courses. The recommendations listed below are for the purpose of covering MCAT material only. More general considerations about recommendations for medical school should be discussed with Dean Cohen or with your advisor.
