Conversations on Leadership

  • Add to Calendar 2010-03-15 04:00:00 2010-03-15 04:00:00 Conversations on Leadership Barnard College and President Debora Spar were honored to host the second annual Barnard College Global Symposium in the United Arab Emirates, to showcase the incredible work being done by preeminent women throughout the Arab world. On Monday, March 15, 2010, Barnard presented a dialogue on women’s leadership, women’s agency and women’s voices: Women in the Arab World. We began the afternoon with a luncheon during which our distinguished guest, Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi, delivered the keynote address. Sheikha Lubna is the UAE’s Minister of Foreign Trade and the first woman in her country to hold a cabinet post. The afternoon included two panels: Voices of the Region, which focused on women in literature and film; and Conversations on Leadership, which examined the changing face of women’s leadership across the Arab world. Given that Barnard is also home to the Athena Center for Leadership Studies, which explores leadership from the distinct perspective of the liberal arts, we were especially interested in hearing about the experiences of successful women worldwide. A reception concluded the day’s events. Last March, Barnard College was delighted to host an influential group of extraordinary women leaders for Women Changing China, our first global symposium in Beijing. These annual gatherings bring together women leaders from diverse fields to share their inspirational stories with young women of the region. And with these special symposia, we provide the opportunity for Barnard, as an American college, to learn from women in other parts of the world and to bring their unique perspectives back to our students.
