As Sexual Assault Awareness Month draws to a close, Being Barnard invites the Barnard Community to wear denim on Wednesday, April 27th, to show solidarity with survivors. In 1999, the Italian Supreme Court overturned the rape conviction based on the assumption that the perpetrator was unable to remove the women's jeans himself because the jeans were too tight. Italian women in Parliament protested by wearing jeans, which led to the rise of a campaign. The first Denim Day was established in Los Angeles, CA by Peace over Violence.
In addition to wearing denim on Wednesday, April 27th, take a selfie or grab a friend for a group picture, use #BarnardDenimDay, and tag Being Barnard on social media. Tabling will also take place on both Barnard and Columbia campuses. Being Barnard Table: Futter Field Walkway 12-2pm | Columbia SVR Table: Lerner Lobby 11am-3pm; 5pm-7pm"
