A Celebration of Women Composers Gail Archer, director of the Barnard music program, moderates a discussion about the rewards and challenges of composing and staging performances of new music by women. Alla Borzova is a composer whose music has been frequently commissioned and performed internationally. Among her many compositions are the song cycle Merry Hour, The Ballad of Barnarby, When the Wind is Blowing, and the one-act comic opera, The Wedding Gift of Pirate Granny. Justine Chen, whose work blends “popular dance rhythms into the kind of propulsive, emotionally resonant score that choreographers tend to dream of,” is the composer of the operas The Maiden Tower and Jeanne. Judith Sainte Croix writes chamber, solo, and electronic pieces, including Vision V, How Music Came to Earth, and a new opera The Vine of the Soul. Join us for a candid discussion about women in music with three extraordinary women who make it. For more information, call 212.854.5096.
