Two members of the Class of 2012 and three other recent alumnae have been announced as recipients of Fulbright Program grants for 2012-2013. For the second year in a row, Barnard is among the top producers of U.S. Fulbright students.
The U.S. government's flagship international educational exchange program, Fulbright operates in 155 countries and is designed to increase mutual understanding between people in the United States and other countries. Grant recipients are selected based on their academic and leadership promise, and the award provides them "with the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns." The program operates in 155 countries.

Phoebe Brosnan ’12, an English major with a concentration in creative writing from Clifton, Virginia, has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship for Germany. In addition to her teaching, Phoebe plans to pursue a research project on immigration, with a primary focus on how students of Turkish descent are integrated into the German education system. After her Fulbright year, she plans to stay in Germany and continue to pursue her interests in fiction writing and film photography.
Annie Hayward ’03, a history major from Seattle, has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship for Malaysia. In addition to her teaching, Annie intends to work with children who have developmental disabilities while in Malaysia. After her Fulbright year, she plans to pursue a master's degree in teaching and become a high school history teacher. She currently works as an assistant editor at a startup company in Seattle.
Sara Probber ’12, a double major in political science and Russian regional studies from Montville, New Jersey, has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship for Russia. While there, she also plans to conduct workshops in technological literacy. After her Fulbright year, Sara plans to pursue a master’s degree in international relations or an MBA in international business.
Bethany Schaid '09, a history major from Lombard, Illinois, has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship for Turkey. After graduating from Barnard, Bethany earned a master's degree in teaching from Fordham, and has been teaching in New York City public schools. While teaching in Turkey, she plans to start a community mapping project. After her Fulbright year, she plans to continue working in the field of education, and to pursue her interest in writing fiction for young adults.
Daniela Arreola Segrove ’08, a double major in political science and theatre from Mexico City, has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship for Andorra. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Daniela plans to help develop a theatre education program while in Andorra. After her Fulbright year, she plans to continue working in the field of higher education and pursuing her interest in theatre, and, eventually, pursue a doctorate degree. Since graduating, Daniela has worked in the Barnard Admissions Office, and has earned a master's degree at Teachers College in higher and post-secondary education.
