With the support of the Learning by Giving Foundation, a social entrepreneurship class at Barnard has awarded a $10,000 grant to GEMS: Girls Educational & Mentoring Services, which provides services for girls and young women who are victims of sexual exploitation and trafficking. In The Wall Street Journal, adjunct professor Thomas Kamber is quoted discussing the experience for his students, who were responsible for vetting proposals from deserving charities. An excerpt:

""They may never have another chance to give away a $10,000 grant, and I think they knew they wanted it to go to something that was innovative and meaningful," said Thomas Kamber, the adjunct professor who teaches the course. "But they also wanted to make sure it was something that they could look back on a year from now and say, 'There's a difference that I made in the world.'"
