This fall’s edition of Barnard/Columbia Dances at New York Live Arts from Nov. 19–21 featured three world premieres choreographed by Alexandra Beller, Molissa Fenley, and Caitlin Trainor, along with a revival of Mark Morris’s Canonic 3/4 Studies (circa 1982). Staged by Barnard College visiting professor and alumna Marjorie Folkman '91, Canonic 3/4 Studies was also performed to live piano accompaniment by Robert Boston.
In the weeks following the performance, two positive reviews were published. Caroline Midy ’17 published a review on Dance Enthusiast, and in it she said, “I was transported to a different world…I explored fire and water and examined the complexities of art. I watched the dances from the audience while at the same time being completely immersed in the dancers’ movements. How could I possibly be in two different places at once?”
Echoing Midy’s sentiment on the performance was Katherine Bergstorm (CC '14), editor of the blog Point of Contact. In her review, Bergstrom not only expressed her enjoyment of the program: “[The performance] showcased the depth and diversity of talent thriving in the college’s uptown studios,” but also lauded the Barnard Department of Dance as having, “…distinguished itself as a creative haven, inviting aspiring choreographers and chemical engineers alike to take part in its offerings.”
Barnard/Columbia Dances is produced by the Barnard College Department of Dance. Performances, staged by Barnard and Columbia University students, are held biannually.
