In an effort to "build the South Africa of our dreams," activist and scholar Dr. Mamphela Ramphele is creating a new political party called Agang, a word in the Sesotho language meaning “Build." An anti-apartheid fighter and former senior director of the World Bank, Ramphele was a panelist at Barnard's third annual global symposium "Women Changing Africa," which took place in Johannesburg in 2011. She also served visited Barnard's campus in September 2011, when she served as the keynote speaker at the Barnard Center for Research on Women's 40th anniversary conference (view video below).
