WHO: The Barnard College Dance Department presents the “Moving Body—Moving Image” Festival on April 7, featuring films and discussions about representations of people of color dancing and moving in film.

Schedule:

12:00 p.m.: Opening Exhibition with Artist Ayo Janeen Jackson

12.30 - 2.00 p.m.: Screening, Short Program 1, followed by discussion (full Short Program schedule)

2:00 - 3:00 p.m.: Lunch - Meet the artists and filmmakers, view student films

3:00 - 4.30 p.m.: Screening Short Program 2, followed by discussion with filmmakers (full Short Program schedule)

4.30 - 5.30 p.m.: Special dialogue with featured speaker Lisa Cortes, Oscar nominated producer of Precious (2009) and Shadowboxing (2005), and Eva Yaa Asantewaa, Bessie Award-winning dance critic

5.30 p.m.: Reception hosted by the Provost’s Office

 

Selected films for the short programs include Afro Promo #1 KINGLADY by Nora Chipaumire; Black Stain, the Jury Award Winner of ScreenDance Miami by director Tiffany Rhynard and choreographer Trent D. Williams; Son Du Serpent, a film from Benin by Feri de Geus and Tami Ravid; and many other films from around the world.
 

WHAT: Moving Body—Moving Image Festival is a free event, curated by Assistant Professor of Professional Practice Gabri Christa, focusing on the brown body and its representation on screen, as well as the social themes present in the hybrid form of filmmaking called ScreenDance. The afternoon’s lineup will include films and discussions, as well as virtual reality and interactive features that probe the role of technology in dance.

Prof. Christa will be the director of the Movement Lab in The Milstein Center, opening in Fall 2018, and received a grant for the festival through Barnard’s Committee for Online and On-campus Learning (COOL).
