Ann Whitney Olin Professor of English Achsah Guibbory has been named Honored Scholar of the Year by the Milton Society of America. This award, given since 1948, is considered a lifetime achievement award in Milton scholarship. Honored Scholars of the Year have included C.S. Lewis, Northrop Frye, Christopher Hill, and Marjorie Hope Nicolson. Professor Guibbory, a past president of the organization, will be honored at the Milton Society Dinner in January, 2019, at the Modern Language Association annual convention in Chicago.
Professor Guibbory joined the Barnard faculty in 2004. She is affiliated with Barnard's Medieval and Renaissance studies program and is the author of Returning to John Donne; Christian Identity, Jews, and Israel in Seventeenth-Century England; Ceremony and Community from Herbert to Milton; and The Cambridge Companion to John Donne. She has received a number of awards, grants, and fellowships including from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.
