Vienna Stories: Filming Identities and Voices

The Department of German organized a week-long project in Vienna, Austria, during spring break for nine Barnard and Columbia advanced German-language students. The trip was led by Senior Associate in German and Language Program Coordinator Prof. Irene Motyl-Mudretzkyj for her course “Vienna Stories: Filming Identities and Voices.”

To study identity, stereotypes, and the notion of homeland, the students met, interviewed, and filmed refugees, recent immigrants, and native Viennese citizens. The students produced a documentary from this footage, which is available through the department's website.
