In February 2017, the College reached an agreement on a first contract with the Barnard Contingent Faculty Union (BCF)-UAW that reflects our deep respect for the union members’ significant contribution to the Barnard community. As with all members of the Union, compensation for adjunct faculty teaching the First-Year Seminar course is governed by the contract. The minimum pay for adjuncts in the 2018-2019 academic year for three-point courses, like First Year Seminar, is $8,000, or a 3 percent increase from the faculty member's previous pay for that course, whichever is greater. The pay is not set by the department chairs or program directors, but rather is governed by the contract. All adjunct faculty received an increase with the implementation of the Union contract, including those teaching the First Year Seminar course, and the new compensation level incorporates the stipend that was paid separately in the past.
