NSOP Committee

The NSOP Committee works throughout the summer with Student Life administrators to plan and implement various components of Barnard's NSOP, as well as work with the CC/SEAS & GS Committees to continue collaboration between the schools.

Timeline for NSOP 2019 Committee Selection:

  • Application Opens: Friday, November 30
  • Committee Info Session (required): Wednesday, December 12 | 12-1pm & Wednesday, January 23 | 8:30am-9:30am in Diana LL104
  • Application Closes: Monday, January 28
  • Group Interviews: Friday, February 1 from 8:30am-10:00am and 3:30pm-5:00pm
  • Individual Interviews: Monday, February 4 - Wednesday, February 6
  • Offers sent out on Friday, February 8
  • Offers to be confirmed by Monday, February 11

Time Commitments for NSOP 2019 Committee:

  • Spring Training: Weekly meetings on Fridays at 9am
  • Spring Retreat: Saturday, February 16 from 10am - 6pm
  • Assist with CC/OL Interviews: Assigned as schedules allow
  • Summer Retreat: Tuesday, May 28- Thursday, May 30
  • First day of work will be Monday, June 3 (exception for the Committee Chair and Student Leader Coordinator, details below)
  • Work 24 hours a week (Mon-Wed, 9-5pm) during June & July, and 40 hours a week (M-F, 9-5pm) during August.
  • Vacation for the committee is scheduled for July 1-5, 2019. There are no exceptions to this timeline, please plan your summer vacation accordingly.
  • Be present and fully available for the duration of NSOP 2019  from Sunday, August 25- Monday, September 2

Position Descriptions:

CHAIR

  • Work directly with the Associate Director for Student Life and prepare all aspects of NSOP, as well as serve as liaison to other organizations and offices involved with the orientation program.

  • Serve as a liaison to the other colleges, and develop, plan, and execute joint orientation programs between CC/SEAS/GS & Barnard. This includes large-scale programs such as marquee NSOP social events, New York City event, Neighborhood Walking Tours, and other programs ass assigned.

  • Coordinate day-to-day work of other committee members.

  • Along with the Student Leader Coordinator and Student Life staff assist in overseeing the hiring process of Crew Chiefs (CCs) and Orientation Leaders (OLs).

  • Oversee programmatic needs for Move-in Day, First Year President's Welcome, and the First Year BBQ.

  • Applicants should have experience with programming, managing groups, peer leadership, and be highly organized.

  • Must be a matriculated student at Barnard during Spring & Fall 2019 and remain in good standing with the college. You must be on-campus for the Spring 2019 semester to attend trainings and begin the planning process.

  • Applicants should have experience developing and implementing a range of programs, as well as experience working in teams and groups. Experience collaborating with CC/SEAS/GS partners is desirable.

Additional Time Requirements for Chair:
The Chair will be expected to work 4 hours/week once they are selected in the Spring semester to assist with student leader recruitment and begin preparing for the summer. The chair will be paid  for the work during the Spring and can create a flexible work schedule with their supervisor. 

Compensation:

  • Housing provided at no cost to chair during summer & interim periods. This cost typically totals $2,800.

    • Please note: housing will only be provided during the August interim period to those who have housing assignments during the Fall semester.

  • $3,795 summer stipend

  • Spring semester pay rate $12/hr, 4 hrs a week.
     

COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR

  • Design and create brand identity for NSOP 2019; brand identity would lead to the design for the NSOP student leader t-shirts and name tags, NSOP schedule book, images for social media, and other designs as needed.

  • Aid in the development of the orientation theme, media, programming timeline, and strategy in conjunction with Student Life staff.

  • Create vlogs and videos throughout the summer to provide incoming students with information and begin a sense of excitement for the Orientation Program.

  • Oversee the design process, timeline, and execution of the Barnard NSOP Zine.

  • Support committee members and staff on various design projects needed for specific events and programs.

  • Applicants should have an understanding of best practices with social media platforms, specifically: Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, Snapchat and YouTube.

  • Applicants should be comfortable with photography, videography, and digital image editing.

  • Past experience with graphic design and Photoshop and/or InDesign is desirable.

  • Must be a matriculated student at Barnard during Spring & Fall 2019 and remain in good standing with the college.

COMMUNITY EVENTS COORDINATOR

  • Develop, plan, and execute all Barnard-specific orientation activities, including constituent-based events for Transfer, Commuter, and International student populations.

  • Work with offices across Barnard’s campus to plan their involvement and inclusion in NSOP; this will involve working on programs like the Student Services Fair, Bear With Us, and additional Barnard-specific programs based on submission.

  • Oversee the implementation of the all identity base programming during NSOP. Applicants should have experience with faciliting social justice based workshops, and a familiarity with specific community needs. 

  • Applicants should have experience developing and implementing programs in a variety of settings and to meet the needs of a variety of communities.

  • Applicants should have strong time-management skills, be detail-oriented, be able to self-motivate, and have a strong passion for community building.

  • The Community Events Coordinator will be supervised by a member of the Student Life staff.

  • Must be a matriculated student at Barnard during Spring & Fall 2019 and remain in good standing with the college.

STUDENT LEADER COORDINATOR

  • Assist in overseeing the hiring process of CCs and OLs with the Student Life staff.

  • Take the lead in coordinating and planning CC and OL training.

  • Directly support and interact with all student leaders during the summer, providing them guidance and keeping them updated on NSOP dates, requirements, and other important information.

  • Along with Student Life staff, take the lead in scheduling, supporting, and keeping accountable CCs and OLs during the week of NSOP.

  • Assist the Chair with different tasks as needed during the week of NSOP.

  • Applicants should have experience developing and implementing a range of programs, as well as experience working in teams and groups.

  • Experience collaborating with CC/SEAS/GS partners is desirable.

  • Must be a matriculated student at Barnard during Spring & Fall 2019 and remain in good standing with the college. 

Additional Time Requirements for Student Leader Coordinator:
The Student Leader Coordinator will be expected to work 4 hours/week during Crew Chief and Orientation Leader recruitment to help with this process. The SLC will be paid  for the work they do during this time. They will then stop official work hours after student leader hiring is complete and commence again when the rest of the committee begins their work hours on Monday, June 3.
