PCP Student Staff Employment FAQs

What is PCP?

Barnard’s Pre-College Programs are selective programs for bright, highly motivated high school sophomores and juniors who are intellectually prepared for college level work.  In our Summer in the City program, students can choose two courses from a variety of topics including STEM while our Liberal Arts Intensive participants focus on a single subject. Young Women’s Leadership Institute (YWLI) students develop leadership skills and examine the relationship between gender and society, while in our Dance in the City program, students learn about dance from acclaimed Barnard faculty and hone their technique at the Alvin Ailey Dance Extension School. In Athena Summer Innovation Institute, a startup boot camp for young women, 30 young women will build their own business in 10 days. Living on campus is a crucial component of all Pre-College Programs, but is not mandated for the 4-week or 1-week students.

 When is the application deadline?

Applications are due on Sunday, February 25th at 11:59pm.

What are the benefits?

Resident Assistants and Program Coordinators receive a stipend and housing, including Spring and August interim housing. Office Assistants are paid an hourly wage and use part of their income to pay for Barnard Housing. Additionally, all staff are provided a meal plan, a metro card during the duration of the program, acccess to Dodge Gym facilities, and coverage of excursion expenses.

Can I apply while I'm abroad?

Yes! Students abroad for the Spring semester may apply for summer employment. Interviews will be arranged via skype. However, students abroad must be willing to accommodate the Eastern Time Zone for interview communication.

Who is eligible to apply?

Barnard College students in the class of 2021, 2020, and 2019 in good academic standing are eligible to apply for all PCP Staff roles. Current seniors may apply for the Office Assistant role, however, they are not eligible for Barnard College housing. Columbia students are not eligible for summer employment.

Can I have an internship/work/take a class?

All PCP Staff are expected to make the Pre-College Programs and the duties associated with their position their #1 summer priority. With that said, most of our staff are able to take on a part-time internship, job, or take a class. Internships, work, or classes may NOT be scheduled on Wednesdays, as Wednesdays are reserved for PCP participation and an all-staff meeting.

Where will I be housed for the duration of the program?

Staff are housed in air conditioned "dingles" in Sulzberger Hall.

Can I apply for more than one position?

Yes! You may address a position preference in the writing portion of the application.
